What is and AAP and why should we use one?

An AAP or Approved Activity Provider, is an organisation that is licensed directly by the Duke Of Edinburgh Award to offer its services in providing a section of the DofE Award. At Jurassic Watersports, we are a DofE AAP for expeditions at all three levels and residentials at Gold. We are also licensed by The Adventure Activity Licencing Authority (A department of the HSE), so you can be sure you are in extra safe hands with our team.

Remember all those stressful bits of running a DofE we spoke about before? That's why! Let’s be honest, can we really take every last bit of stress away from you as your schools DofE Leader? Of course not! Teachers have it stressful! We know this and we know that there are some things we just can't help with. However, expedition planning and execution? Now that is some stress we definitely can take away from you! When you come to an AAP like us, you are tapping into a vast source of knowledge and experience, as well as a list of tried and tested expedition locations, routes and campsites. We can help with ensuring your young people have all the equipment.  We will provide experienced and qualified expedition staff and we will always be on hand to help or advise at all times from your first enquiry, to the completion of your final expedition package!

There are 100s of AAPs out there, why should we choose you?

This is the most important question. Walking is the default for Dofe, but are there other options?

No! Any DofE Expedition can be ran by means of Walking, Cycling, Horseback, Sailing, Canoeing or Kayaking. At Jurassic Watersports, we specialise in providing Kayaking Expeditions to Schools and Open Groups.

As with any expedition, any questions are best answered over a phone call or even a pop in chat. Most people expect Water-based Expeditions to be significantly more expensive than Walking, however this is not necessarily the case! Yes, Kayaking is going to be at least a little bit more expensive, but not at all as much as many think! The best thing to do if you think your students might like the sound of these kinds of expeditions, is just to get in touch so we can look to build a quote to suit your needs. For all Water-based Expeditions, we provide your participants with all boats, paddles and bouyancy aids, as well as full on water training and supervision from qualified Kayak Coaches and Leaders. Just like any other expedition,we can also offer to provide other essential kit, such as drybags, in pre-arranged Kit Hire Packages. Kayaking is a different and truly great way to complete a DofE Expedition! Get in touch to discuss!

Bronze DofE Expeditions are by far the most common for schools to employ an AAP to run. This is usually due to two key reasons. The first is that Bronze students simply require more training due to this being the first time many of these young people would have done anything like this. The second reason is due to the levels of enrolment currently being seen for the Bronze Award across the country. A Bronze Expedition these days can easily see 100+ young people out and walking, this is an awful lot for a school to manage in house. At Jurassic Watersports, our team have a whole wealth of experience in planning and managing expeditions of all sizes. We have a well refined, tried and tested format for both training and expeditions. We have a variety of locations, routes and campsites all proven to work. Or we can offer the flexibility of coming to you to run from your school grounds and in your local area.

We offer a special 4 day package, which we have refined over years with our current  clients. Ensuring a good level of quality training is delivered to all your young people, preparing them to undertake a successful Qualifying Expedition. We also offer a variety of “Add On” options, to help you build the perfect package for you and your young people.

At Jurassic Watersports, we know every client and every school is different. That is why we like to start every enquiry off with a call or meeting so that we can get to know you and what you need, as well as giving you the chance to find out who we are and what we can do for you. In our experience, most School Bronze Expeditions are for groups of 70/80+. The prices below are based on a group of around that size. To get a full, formal quote, based on your exact numbers and needs, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team. We would be more than happy to discuss all of your requirements!

Silver Expeditions are a stepping stone to Gold, and for many, the last time they will receive any training prior to starting on their preparations for Gold. We work hard to not only encourage participants to become even more independent and self sufficient, but also aim to ensure all of our participants are fully prepared, should they wish to take the big step up to complete their Gold Expeditions in Wild Country!

The requirements for Silver ask for a Practice Expedition of 2 days and 2 nights, followed by a 3 day Qualifying. This is what our 5 Day packages are based around! For the majority of schools we  work with, we act as their AAP for all levels of The Award. So to aid in the schools logistics, as well as our own, we like to operate your Silver Practice alongside your schools Bronze Qualifying. Usually meeting the Silver students at a campsite late afternoon one Friday, then ending up on the same campsite as the Bronze teams for Saturday night and the same finish point for groups of both levels of The Award on Sunday afternoon! We can even look to arrange the Silver Qualifying to run alongside your Gold Practice if you wish, for a fully integrated programme!

This is a format with many advantages! We have found that by running in this format, your Bronze students get a chance to see your Silvers in Action (and Silvers, Golds), which we have seen lead to higher enrolment in Silver and Gold. Your Silvers get the chance to be seen as the role models for the Bronzes to aspire towards. Motivating better performance from both sets of participants. As well as employing the best kind of people to sell the Silver award to your current Bronze students.... current Silvers who can tell them all about how they’ve found it! At Silver, the award is starting to become more and more challenging. Should you wish to ‘up’ the training your Silvers are receiving, choosing a 6 day package will add that extra day of hand on training, allowing our staff to take more of a step back, earlier on, without hindering your students success!  (This is our recommendation for our first year as your AAP!)

Completing a DofE Gold Expedition is no small feat. It will require not only physical determination, but also strong expedition skills that will only come from training and practice. Our Gold Training and Practice Expeditions have just one focus, set the standard and ensure each participant Is 100% ready for a Qualifying Expedition completely independent from supervisor intervention, in a way they can truly enjoy! At Gold, we really suggest branching out to offer the option to complete expeditions in a different mode of transport. Our Kayaking Expeditions are perfect for this! Your students will learn new skills and see a completely different expedition experience to what they saw at Bronze and Silver!

We suggest a minimum of an 8 day package. With the current Gold requirements for a practice of 2 days and 2 nights, (and recommendation of 3 days and 2 nights) this leaves 2 days of mixed, hands on and hands off training, in Gold terrain, followed by 2 days of practice to consolidate these skills. Ensuring participants are suitably competent to complete their 4 day Qualifying Expedition, with little to no input from supervisor staff.

We know that many schools struggle to recruit enough participants to make a Gold Expedition run. We have a solution to help with this!

We can offer the option of mixing your students in with an Open Group, or even combine your group with a group from one of our other schools! This way we can help to make an expedition work, without pushing the price up!

Pricing for a School Gold Expedition is never easy. We can’t say for sure how much it will cost, until you know how many participants you will have, you can’t tell us that without knowing how much it will cost! To help break this loop, we always advise that when recruiting, you use our Open prices as a benchmark, as this is likely the most expensive it ‘could’ be. Then when you know for sure how many are interested, we can confirm any possible discount we can offer!

(Make sure to think about offering Water-based Expeditions at Gold! It might not be as expensive as you think!)

Bronze:

For Bronze Expeditions we usually advise a 4 day Kayaking package. (As a 4 day block if possible.) This would usually be in Poole Harbour. The 4 days allows for 2 days of solid Instructor led training, to make sure that even the most inexperienced Paddlers have the skills needed to successfully and safely complete their final 2 days as a Qualifying Expedition, with minimum intervention from our Instructor team.

Silver:

For Silver Expeditions we usually advise a 6 day Kayaking package, with a 3 day Training/Practice in Poole Harbour, or on the River Thames. Followed by a 3 day Qualifying Expedition either on the River Thames or River Wye. For Kayaking Expeditions like this, we can also offer to arrange a training day/weekend in advance of their Practice Expedition.

Gold:

Gold Expeditions are by far the most common for water-based. We run successful, 8 day Open Expeditions each year, based on the River Thames for a Training Day and Practice Expedition, followed by a final Qualifying on the River Wye, from Hay-On-Wye, down to Symonds Yat. For groups with little to no kayak training or experience, we do recommend adding additional training to ensure they are adequately prepared.

Just like any other expedition,we can also offer to provide other essential kit, such as drybags, in pre-arranged Kit Hire Packages. What our Clients say...

Thank you for your hard work and relentless positivity over the last three days! Overall, it has been a successful practice expedition. This is down to the professionalism of the instructors so thank you. I know that the start and end of this style of exped is challenging with such a long kit handout and return process but thank you for your help and support with this.

Jurassic Watersports are brilliant, flexible, excellent communication and make the experience of having an AAP run the Duke of Edinburgh Award hassle-free from a small Gold Award group to a large Bronze Award group. The instructors (Chris, Kelvin, Roger, Jordan) are lovely with the pupils and pitch the training at a fun level that works for all. I am looking forward to working more with Jurassic Watersports Team!

FAQ's

Is there a lot of paperwork involved?

Not loads, but obviously there is still some! The only paperwork you will see is:

  • A formal quote
  • Deposit invoice
  • Provider agreement
  • Group medical and consent form
  • Any company licences, policies or insurance documents you require
  • Balance invoice
  • (you to provide us) A List of groups with any medical information

Where do you run your Expeditions?

That very much depends on where you want us! We can come to you, or you can come to us, whatever is easier!

How do I contact you?

If you have any questions please email DofE@jurassicwatersports.co.uk or call us on 01202 985289.

What if I cancel?

This doesn't happen often! (Until the last couple of years of course!) Your DofE Co-ordinator will discuss with you exact refund dates and deposits for your booking.

If the expedition is unable to go ahead due to Government/Legal restrictions, we will discuss with you options for transferring the booking. If this is not possible, we will refund as much as possible, however on occasion we will need to keep small amounts of funds to cover unavoidable costs.

Is there a minimum group size?

As per DofE rules, we need a minimum of 4 participants to run. We will base your quote on the numbers you have, so no, there is no real minimum, just keep in mind smaller numbers will cost more. If you are struggling for numbers, ask us about adding your students to an open expedition.

Do you provide a kit list?

Yes! You can find full detailed kit lists here...

We will also provide your students with an Information booklet that has a detailed kit list with advice on what to look for.

What if we just need an assessor?

No problem! Just get in touch with your dates and number of groups and we would be happy to discuss this.

What happens if we have dropouts?

Dropouts are a real pain, but something you can't avoid with DofE. We structure our payments to account for this and we are happy to adjust invoices to account for dropouts. However, our prices are based on your numbers. So if your numbers drop too radically, it could affect how much of a refund we can offer. The best course of action is to keep in touch with our team and let us know ASAP if numbers start to change.

How does booking work?

  1. Step one is you make an enquiry. This will usually lead to us arranging a time to speak about this over the phone or by popping in to see you.
  2. You confirm what you need and we will provide a formal quote.
  3. You approve the quote and we issue a deposit invoice.
  4. When the deposit is paid, we will issue you with a provider agreement and consent form to sign. (we will also provide copies of policies and insurance etc)
  5. Just before any Training or Practice, you will provide us with a list of groups. (Detailing student names, contact info, EDofE No. and medical info)
  6. We will then issue an invoice for 50% to be paid 30 days before your Training/Practice weekend, followed by a second invoice for 50% 30 days before your Qualifying dates.
  7. Following your Qualifying, we will upload reports straight to EDofE and we can start to plan for next year!

Do you have a maximum capacity?

No, not really! Tell us what you need and we can usually provide it!
